Defining Tank Gauging
Tank gauging is the generic name given to the quantity measurement of liquids (product) in bulk storage tanks. The earliest measurements were taken to account for product movements into and out of the tank. Today, the oil & gas industry uses the static measurement of the tank contents to account for product. This is due to the "static" time when a tank is primarily being used for storage, as opposed to special processes occurring inside the tank as in other industries, such as food or beverage, chemical or waste water.

There are many instruments and systems available that can provide the combination of measurements that will allow an accurate quantity assessment and, hence, good inventory management. But, before a particular instrument is chosen and a system installed into your plant, factors affecting application requirements should be considered.
